gas turbine:

Gas turbine equipment used in land-based applications are subjected to high mechanical loads at high temperatures and must withstand corrosion from hot gas and wear from contaminants such as fuel and contaminated air. To protect against these harsh environments, special coatings have been developed using laser coating technology. These coatings increase the operational lifespan of equipment and allow for an increase in turbine inlet temperature (TET), resulting in improved thermal efficiency.
The coatings used on turbine blades and vanes are typically made of nickel-based superalloys (resistant to high temperatures) or cobalt-based superalloys. Nickel-based superalloys such as IN738 have excellent oxidation resistance properties but are not as resistant to corrosion and wear at high temperatures. Cobalt-based superalloys have excellent corrosion resistance properties, but are less resistant to oxidation. Today, laser coating technology is recognized globally as a new method for repairing various types of blades and is one of the best methods for major turbine repairs.

Laser coating technology for gas turbines provides significant advantages, including:

  • Enhanced resistance to oxidation and corrosion
  • Three-dimensional (AM) manufacturing of parts
  • Increased resistance to erosion
  • Improved workability and durability of parts and equipment
